Online classes for UAE schools now set to continue until mid-April

The Ministry of Education has pushed the distance learning timeline further, confirming on Monday night that all students, teachers, and administrative staff will remain learning from home until Friday, April 17, 2026. The decision covers every nursery, kindergarten, and public and private school across the country.

The announcement, which came just days before the previous April 3 deadline was due to expire, means that UAE schools will have been operating remotely for over six consecutive weeks — the longest uninterrupted stretch of online learning since the Covid-19 pandemic. As reported by Khaleej Times, the Ministry stated that the measure is in place to ensure everyone's safety and well-being, with the situation continuing to be reassessed on a weekly basis.

A Timeline That Has Steadily Extended

Schools first shifted to distance learning on March 2, initially for just three days. That window was quickly widened, and authorities subsequently brought the spring break forward by a week. When classes resumed for Term 3 on March 23, the remote format carried over for an additional two weeks, with the KHDA confirming an April 3 end date for Dubai's private schools.

According to Gulf News, the latest extension builds on this rolling approach, with each review period giving the authorities flexibility to respond to evolving circumstances. The April 17 date is itself subject to further weekly reassessment.

New Academic Year Also Starts Online

The timing of the announcement has also affected schools operating on different academic calendars. As reported by Gulf News, Indian and Pakistani curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the northern emirates opened their 2026–27 academic year on Monday — but entirely online. The start had already been delayed by a week following directives from the Sharjah Private Education Authority and regulators in other emirates.

For many of these schools, it marked the first day of formal schooling for hundreds of kindergarten-age children, with institutions holding mock sessions over the weekend to help young students and their parents get comfortable with the online format. Dubai's Asian curriculum schools, which had been scheduled to resume in-person classes on April 6, will now also remain remote until at least mid-April.

Universities Begin Cautious Return to Campus

While schools remain fully online, the higher education sector is taking a different path. Gulf News reported that several UAE universities began a gradual return to on-campus learning on Monday, March 30, following a directive from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The phased return is limited to programmes that require hands-on training — such as those involving clinical placements, laboratory work, or practical fieldwork — and also allows universities to hold examinations on campus. The move was coordinated with the Education, Human Development, and Community Development Council.

However, not all institutions have opted to return. According to Gulf News, the American University of Sharjah confirmed it would remain fully remote until further notice, while the American University of Ras Al Khaimah said distance learning would stay in effect through April 3. The American University in Dubai similarly confirmed that all classes and operations remain online for now.

Reopening Pathway Remains Available

As Time Out Dubai noted, the authorities continue to allow private schools and nurseries to apply for a return to in-person learning. Each request must be submitted formally to the KHDA with clear justification and is reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Ministry of Education, with student safety remaining the deciding factor.

The government's measured, step-by-step approach — combining weekly reviews with flexibility for individual institutions — ensures that any return to classrooms will be carefully managed and aligned with the latest safety assessments. Families are advised to continue monitoring official channels for updates as the April 17 review date approaches.
